I waited a while, work and classes suck your life around holidays, to see this movie. I managed to get some friends together and we went to the imax. I was actually surprised, it wasn't.... terrible.
Okay, first off, it wasn't the best movie ever. As much as people gave 'Batman v Superman' shit, I thoroughly enjoyed that film. While people were vehemently defending 'Suicide Squad' with a crackpot theory that people "just shit all over the DC universe without even giving it a chance", I found it to be pretty bad. Justice League (2017) fits snugly between the two. It isn't terrible, but it isn't great either. It wasn't 'Wonder Woman' though we had plenty of her in the film, let me tell you that.
This takes place after "Batman v Superman: The Death of Superman", with Superman's death sending the world into a complete state of hopelessness, and sending out signals to the galaxy that its mightiest defender is dead. Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) decides to form a team from a roster of "meta humans" he got from Lex Luthor's servers in the last film (last being BvS, not Wonder Woman). In this team, he gets the help of Wonder Woman to find the Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman to fight the forces of Apokolips and Steppenwolf. Here, the three mother boxes (MacGuffins) are activating and calling out to Dakrseid, in the hopes of terraforming Earth.
So, yeah, that's pretty much it. We meet Steppenwolf on Themyscira (the Amazon home island), and he just cleans house. For about a few months after Superman died, he's been sending out scouts (parademons) to find traces of the mother boxes. Just randomly they reactivate and are summoning him. In the film, he just destroys the Amazonians. He is being surrounded by hundreds of warriors on horseback, and he cleans up. The queen decides to send a flaming arrow to strike an ancient Greek temple, that is still miraculously standing, in the hopes that the world (specifically Wonder Woman) will know they are under attack. Most of the movie is meeting our heroes. Jason Momoa, as Aquaman, is always great (he played Khal Drogo from 'GoT'). Flash and Cyborg are kinda iffy for me in the film. People I've talked to seem to find Flash annoying. I found his comedy to be awkward, which I can relate to. But his run is very odd. Imagine Frozone from 'The Incredibles', sliding on ice and throwing out ice balls to keep momentum. That is him, but with lightning instead of ice. The lightning strikes were an actual cool touch, I thought they were gonna go the Quicksilver route of him being "fast", but every step in the "speedforce" generates lightning for a fraction of a second. Cool touch which I liked. Cyborg looked cool, in some scenes. His armor is like the same aesthetic from "Deus Ex", it has triangle patterns that reflect light and shadow differently, which is cool. But his human face in some scenes is really.... bad. Like, terrible. There is a scene in the Kryptonian ship in which everyone is bathed in shadow, some along the jaw, some under the eyes, etc. His robot body looks good as it has an ambient red light or blue lights flashing, which looks alien. His human face though, in that scene specifically, looked weird. Like his face doesn't have the shadows layered on correctly, if they went full cgi or not.
Also, something I need to explain, Superman. Just, oh my god was he dumb. I get that he is 98.9% the power of the Justice League alone, but it just seemed that the whole film was "we are helpless, we need to wake him up". They asked if he might become a monster, like Doomsday, but outside of that it was unanimous. Also, upon waking up, he just decides to wreck his new team. No greetings to Wonder Woman or Batman, even though he knows who they are upon being brought back from the dead, he just decides to single-handedly show them how trash they are. Then, he flies away with Lois and decides to just ignore shit. Until the end of the movie when the remaining team of useless heroes go to a town in Russia to fight the one guy who has proven already to be more powerful than any of them can hope to defeat. He's faster, stronger and better than any of them. Batman didn't have a plan to defeat Steppenwolf, Wonder Woman didn't use her god powers from her movie, Cyborg didn't use his semi understanding of the mother box to find a weakness, nothing. Superman came, beat his ass, they got him scared, and the parademons began eating Steppenwolf. Also, I know why those reshoots were being mocked. In close-up scenes of Henry Cavill, you can see where they cgi'd the facial hair off. His lips look too smooth, or his face lacks shadow and light, etc.
The post-credit scene was the hypest shit ever though. Lex escaped jail, obviously, and we see a speed boat heading toward a yacht. My friends and I were confused, the driver has 2 katanas. We were thinking "no way, is that Deathstroke?" As it turns out, it is Deathstroke! His suit is, more or less, a near rip from "Batman: Arkham Origins" (which I think is the best Deathstroke suit), and Lex and Deathstroke hint at making the 'League of Evil'. Again, it was alright, not bad, not good either.
